University of Delhi removes Delhi Sultanate course from PG syllabus

The University of Delhi has removed a specialized postgraduate history paper focused on the Delhi Sultanate from its newly notified syllabus. The course, titled ‘The Delhi Sultanate: Structures of Authority in Medieval North India (13th–14th Centuries),’ was previously a core component of the Semester III curriculum.

In addition to the Delhi Sultanate paper, the revised syllabus also excludes the postgraduate course ‘History of North India, c. 1400–1550.’ These changes are part of the postgraduate programme under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and are scheduled to take effect from July 2026.

Critics, including Academic Council member Professor Maya John, have raised concerns regarding the decision. Faculty members have noted that while undergraduate courses provide a broad survey of Indian history, these removed postgraduate papers offered a more detailed, thematic, and specialized examination of medieval political, religious, and cultural developments.
