University of Delhi to host seminar on motherhood and child well-being in prisons

The University of Delhi’s Faculty of Law, in collaboration with the Saraswati Institute of Law in Palwal, Haryana, will host a multidisciplinary national seminar on September 9, 2026. Titled “Motherhood and Child Well-Being of Imprisoned Women: Legal and Socio-Economic Perspectives,” the event will be held in a hybrid format.

The seminar is part of an ongoing research project sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) titled “A Study of Motherhood and Child Well-being of Imprisoned Women in Delhi Jails.” The project aims to investigate the lived experiences of incarcerated women and the specific conditions impacting their children within the Delhi prison system.

Discussions will focus on the socio-legal challenges faced by incarcerated mothers, particularly regarding their roles as caregivers, and the resulting impact on the health, emotional security, and social development of their children. The seminar intends to facilitate academic discussion and policy dialogue concerning existing laws, prison policies, and welfare mechanisms.
