University of Dhaka restores Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall nameplate

The University of Dhaka has begun the process of restoring the original nameplate for the Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall. The university administration started replacing the ‘Shaheed Osman Hadi Hall’ sign with the former ‘Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall’ designation on Wednesday.

Following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in 2024, the hall's name had been changed. After the death of Osman Hadi, a student activist, there were significant demands from students to rename the hall in his honor. In December 2023, students had replaced the original nameplate with a banner for ‘Shaheed Osman Hadi Hall.’

University officials stated that the decision to revert to the original name was made to resolve confusion among students and visitors regarding the hall's identity. The move follows previous internal university debates and senate sessions regarding the renaming of various landmarks and halls associated with the Sheikh family.
