University of Essex staff to strike over 400 job cuts

Staff at the University of Essex are scheduled to participate in a one-day strike next Monday to protest a restructuring programme that includes the loss of 400 jobs. The cuts are part of a £24 million savings package that has already resulted in the closure of the university's Southend campus.

The industrial action, announced by the trade union UNISON, will involve admissions advisers, IT technicians, administrative workers, and other professional services staff. Union representatives claim the walkout is a necessary response to university leadership's refusal to engage in meaningful consultation or consider alternative proposals to reduce job losses.

The strike is timed to coincide with the university's annual Court meeting. UNISON regional organiser Wayne Instone stated that staff are being forced to strike in an attempt to prevent the destruction of the institution, noting that the measures risk damaging the quality of education and student support.
