University of Exeter study finds beetroot juice lowers blood pressure
Researchers from the University of Exeter have found that regular consumption of beetroot juice can lead to noticeable health benefits, particularly in seniors, within just two weeks.
A study involving 75 healthy participants—split between young adults (18–30) and seniors (67–79)—demonstrated that drinking concentrated beetroot juice twice daily can help lower blood pressure. The juice is rich in natural nitrates, which are processed by oral bacteria into nitrites and subsequently into nitric oxide. This compound is essential for maintaining vascular elasticity and regulating blood pressure, a function that naturally declines with age.
In the older demographic, researchers observed significant changes in the oral microbiome. Specifically, there was a decrease in Prevotella (bacteria associated with inflammation) and an increase in Neisseria, a beneficial bacterium that aids in the metabolism required to produce nitric oxide.
