University of Extremadura professor wins National Teacher Prize

Ignacio Fernández Portero, a professor at the University of Extremadura (UEx), has been awarded the National Teacher Prize Spain 2026 in the University category. The award recognizes his commitment to innovative and inclusive teacher training.

The recognition is based on two primary initiatives: "Aula del Futuro" (Classroom of the Future) and "Neuroaventura Multilingüe" (Multilingual Neuroadventure). The "Aula del Futuro" project, a three-year collaboration with the Castra Caecilia school in Cáceres, allows students in Early Childhood and Primary Education to design real-world learning situations.

These initiatives incorporate generative artificial intelligence and active methodologies such as gamification, project-based learning, and experiential learning. The projects aim to prepare future language teachers to handle modern educational challenges, including digital tool mastery, critical thinking, and addressing local issues such as pollution and natural disasters.
