University of Florida-led research center receives $22 million Alzheimer’s grant

The National Institute on Aging has awarded a $22.3 million, five-year grant to the 1Florida Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (1Florida ADRC), a research network led by the University of Florida.

The funding aims to advance the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s and related dementias, such as Lewy body dementia, by moving discoveries into clinical practice. The research network utilizes new techniques to evaluate individuals with memory disorders and seeks to develop early diagnostic tools, including potential blood tests for primary care providers.

The consortium is a collaboration involving the University of Florida, Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, the University of Miami, Florida Atlantic University, and Florida International University. The initiative focuses on expanding access to clinical trials and improving care across Florida, where an estimated 580,000 residents currently live with Alzheimer’s.
