University of Genoa to host conference on LiDAR and AI in archaeology

The University of Genoa will host a conference on October 14, 2026, featuring Claudine Gravel-Miguel from the University of Montreal. The lecture, titled “LiDAR for archaeology and AI object detection,” will explore how the integration of LiDAR laser scanning and machine learning algorithms is transforming archaeological research.

LiDAR technology allows for the creation of highly detailed three-dimensional terrain models, enabling researchers to identify ground morphologies that are invisible to the human eye or traditional surveys, particularly in areas with dense vegetation. AI and machine learning are then used to analyze large datasets to automatically detect structures and anomalies indicative of archaeological sites.

The presentation is part of the InPrA (Prehistory and Anthropology Meetings) series. Gravel-Miguel’s work focuses on the prehistory of Western Europe, specifically studying hunter-gatherer communities during the transition from the late Pleistocene to the early Holocene in the Liguria and Maritime Alps regions.
