University of Georgia team captures first 3‑D footage of epileptic seizure in zebrafish brain
A research team at the University of Georgia has built a fast light‑sheet microscopy system that records high‑resolution 3‑D images fast enough to follow an epileptic seizure as it spreads through the brain of a zebrafish larva. The new setup reduces exposure to intense light, improves optical correction in real time and captures a full volume in about 0.25 seconds—seven times faster than earlier versions—producing 600 continuous 3‑D frames in two and a half minutes.
Analysis of the images shows seizure activity beginning in the posterior region of the brain and propagating forward, providing unprecedented detail on how abnormal electrical signals travel. The study also examined the role of the gad1b gene in this process. Researchers say the ability to visualise seizures in three dimensions will help develop more effective treatments for epilepsy.
