University of Georgia study finds social media boosts investor confidence without increasing knowledge
Research from the University of Georgia suggests that social media may create a false sense of confidence among investors. A study involving more than 2,500 U.S. adults found that individuals who rely on social media for investment guidance often feel highly knowledgeable but struggle to answer fundamental questions regarding topics such as corporate stocks and short selling.
In contrast, investors who obtain information from traditional media sources, including newspapers, magazines, television, and radio, reported higher levels of confidence that aligned with their actual understanding of financial concepts. Researchers noted that while social media increases perceived confidence, it does not necessarily improve real knowledge, making it difficult for users to verify if an investment product is appropriate for their needs.
