University of Georgia study links extreme heat to alcohol use

A study from the University of Georgia, published in the journal JMIR Aging, has found a link between extreme heat periods and increased alcohol consumption in adults aged 50 and older. The research suggests that childhood adverse experiences may influence these patterns when individuals face environmental stressors.

Participants who reported parental substance abuse or encounters with law enforcement during childhood were more likely to consume alcohol during heatwaves. Conversely, those who reported a positive relationship with their father were less likely to drink. Researchers noted that while a direct causal link is not yet established, the association is concerning due to the increased risks of dehydration, cardiovascular damage, and psychological consequences associated with drinking during extreme heat.
