University of Ghana Hospital suspends services due to GAUA strike
The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has initiated an industrial strike, causing significant service disruptions at the University of Ghana Hospital. As of August 13, the hospital has suspended its General Outpatient Department (OPD), specialist clinics, and pharmacy counseling services.
While the hospital’s emergency department remains operational for urgent medical needs, patients who do not meet the emergency-care threshold are facing difficulties accessing care. Some patients have reported being unable to secure medical attention for non-emergency but serious conditions, such as severe pain and loss of sensation.
The strike is driven by disputes regarding the implementation of the association’s conditions of service and other welfare issues affecting university administrators. The industrial action has impacted several public universities due to the absence of essential administrative staff. Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu is scheduled to meet with GAUA representatives on August 18, 2026, to attempt to resolve the dispute.
