University of Ghana students to protest hostel fee increases

Students at the University of Ghana are scheduled to hold a march and rally on Friday, October 30, 2026, to protest rising accommodation fees. Organized by the #SaveTheUniversity Movement, Students for Accommodation, and Concerned Students of Ghana, the demonstration is themed “End Student Exploitation Now!”.

Protesters claim that continuing students are being charged between GH¢5,000 and GH¢8,000 to secure residential places. The organizing groups accused the university of prioritizing revenue generation over student welfare and criticized the conversion of traditional halls into facilities managed by the University of Ghana Enterprise Limited (UGEL), which reportedly charge higher fees.

Additional grievances include the university’s “In-Out-Out-Out” accommodation policy, which students say leaves continuing residents without facilities, as well as issues with water shortages, overcrowding, and poor sanitation. The groups also requested updates on a proposed 10,000-bed prefabricated hostel project announced in January 2026 and expressed concern over extended-stay charges for graduate students.
