University of Gibraltar unveils new maritime simulation centre

The University of Gibraltar has unveiled a new Maritime Academy Simulation Centre designed to enhance the training of future maritime cadets. The facility is the only one of its kind in the region and features two simulation suites utilizing technology from Wärtsilä.

The center meets training requirements set by the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), including a Part Task Navigational Bridge Simulator that complies with sea-time equivalency standards. Funding for the project was provided by Peninsula, Hercules Tanker Management, and Boluda Towage.

A key focus of the initiative is addressing knowledge gaps regarding alternative marine fuels. Through a partnership with Peninsula, the center will provide training modules for handling alternative fuels and LNG bunkering to support the evolving needs of the maritime industry.
