University of Glasgow researchers develop new treatment for potato diseases
Researchers at the University of Glasgow have developed a new antimicrobial treatment to combat blackleg and soft rot in potato crops. These bacterial diseases, which spread through infected seed tubers, cause billions of pounds in losses globally each year and can cost individual growers up to £100,000 per outbreak.
Led by Joel Milner, the research team utilized bacteriocins—naturally occurring proteins with antibacterial properties—to target the harmful bacteria. Supported by the Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre (IBioIC), the project has resulted in the formation of a spin-out company, Casdu Crop Solutions.
Early glasshouse trials indicate the treatment can suppress infections in seed tubers. The researchers noted that climate change, specifically wetter summers, may increase the spread of these diseases. The goal is to provide an affordable, easy-to-apply, and environmentally friendly solution to improve the sustainability of the potato industry.
