University of Glasgow study links prolonged sitting to cancer risk
A study published in PLOS Medicine by researchers from the University of Glasgow has linked prolonged sedentary behavior to an increased risk of cancer mortality. By analyzing data from over 90,000 participants in the UK Biobank over a period of approximately 12 years, scientists found that sitting or lying down for more than 30 consecutive minutes a day is associated with higher cancer risks.
The research indicates that for every additional hour of continuous inactivity, the risk of dying from cancer increases by approximately 10%. The findings specifically highlight associations with obesity-related cancers and type 2 diabetes-related cancers.
However, the study suggests that these risks can be mitigated through simple lifestyle changes. Professor Frederick Ho, who led the study, noted that "interrupting time spent sitting with a simple activity like a short walk could have a protective effect." Replacing just one hour of prolonged sedentary behavior each day with light physical activity, such as household chores, can reduce the risk of cancer death by an average of 12%.
