University of Granada thesis addresses obstetric violence in Spanish prisons
The University of Granada has hosted the defense of Spain’s first doctoral thesis focused on breastfeeding experiences and obstetric violence among incarcerated women. Conducted by psychologist Pilar Roig Jubany under the direction of Ester Massó Guijarro, the research utilizes an ethnographic approach to document the lived experiences of imprisoned mothers.
The study highlights significant barriers to exercising breastfeeding rights, which the United Nations recognized as a human right in 2016. It also addresses obstetric violence as a global public health issue, detailing instances of physical and clinical mistreatment, such as unjustified medical procedures, forced immobilization, and inadequate analgesia.
Furthermore, the research identifies psycho-affective violence, including dehumanized treatment and the omission of necessary care. Part of the POyÉTICAS project, the thesis aims to provide the knowledge necessary to transform current penitentiary protocols and ensure safer, more dignified reproductive and childcare environments for women in the prison system.
