University of Groningen researchers double hydrogen production efficiency

Researchers at the University of Groningen have developed a method to double hydrogen production using protonic ceramic electrolyser cells (PCECs) without increasing electricity consumption. The findings, published in Energy and Environmental Science on October 14, 2026, involve the use of a newly engineered nanoengineered material placed on the steam-side of a ceramic membrane.

Unlike traditional hydrogen extraction that passes electric currents through liquid water, PCECs utilize steam to split molecules into oxygen and hydrogen ions. This process is inherently less energy-intensive as it incorporates necessary heat. The breakthrough relies on a previously overlooked synergy between the membrane and electrode materials, which allows for more efficient steam splitting.

The system demonstrated stable operation for at least 500 hours during testing. This advancement could significantly impact heavy industry, which currently relies heavily on hydrogen produced from fossil fuels, by providing a more efficient pathway for clean energy generation.
