University of Guadalajara to limit cell phone use in high schools

The University of Guadalajara (UdeG), through its High School Education System (SEMS), has announced the 'Presente' program, an initiative to regulate mobile phone use in its schools. Starting with the 2026-B academic calendar, the program will implement a 60-minute daily pause during the school day where students are prohibited from using cell phones.

The pilot project aims to benefit approximately 163,000 students across regional and metropolitan high schools. By designating common areas like patios and hallways as phone-free zones, the university intends to foster face-to-face interaction, creativity, and socio-emotional development.

UdeG General Rector Karla A. Planter Pérez stated that the goal is not to eliminate technology, but to promote responsible use and help students reconnect with personal and community experiences. The initiative seeks to address hyper-digitalization and encourage critical thinking and social identity through direct human connection.
