Guanajuato marks 216th anniversary of Alhóndiga de Granaditas

Guanajuato celebrated the 216th anniversary of the Toma de la Alhóndiga de Granaditas with a civic-military parade and the symbolic renewal of the Independence Fire. The event, led by Governor Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo, featured over 180 participating institutions, including schools, unions, and security forces.

However, the commemorations were marked by protests from University of Guanajuato (UG) students. The demonstrators demanded justice following the alleged arbitrary detention and physical assault of five students by municipal police officers in the state capital.

In response to the incident, Guanajuato Mayor Samantha Smith Gutiérrez announced the temporary suspension of the involved officers. State Prosecutor Gerardo Vázquez Alatriste confirmed that an investigation has been opened to address the alleged abuse of authority.
