University of Hamburg Dismisses Chancellor Martin Hecht Amid Financial Pressures

The University of Hamburg’s Hochschulrat (governing council) voted to remove Chancellor Martin Hecht from office with immediate effect. Finance and accounting director Andrea Hellwig will serve as interim head of the university administration until a successor is appointed.

The council did not disclose specific reasons for the dismissal. Chairwoman Prof. Petra Wend said the decision was taken after careful deliberation within the council’s statutory responsibilities. University President Hauke Heekeren emphasized that teaching and services will continue without interruption and that contact points for staff and students remain unchanged.

The action comes as the university faces a structural budget deficit of about €22 million on a base budget of €390 million, prompting required cuts of at least 10.5% for faculties and 11% for administration through 2032. Earlier in June, thousands of students and employees protested the austerity measures on the campus.
