University of Hong Kong President Zhang Xiang to Step Down in 2028

Zhang Xiang, the President and Vice‑Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), announced that he will leave his post at the end of his ten‑year term in 2028. In a letter to university members, Zhang said the institution would benefit from fresh ideas and new leadership, and that he wishes to return to laboratory research to tackle important scientific questions.

Zhang, who has led HKU since 2018 and was the first non‑local-born president, highlighted his desire to continue contributing to the university’s progress over the next two years while preparing for a successor. He thanked the university council, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government and central authorities for their support during his tenure.
