University of Illinois and Chicago researchers achieve steady‑state quantum entanglement via dissipation

Physicists from the University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign and the University of Chicago have demonstrated that environmental dissipation can be harnessed to generate quantum entanglement. Using a pair of superconducting qubits, the team applied a technique called synthetic squeezing, creating entanglement that persists in a steady state and could, in principle, be maintained indefinitely over arbitrarily large distances.

The researchers argue that this approach bypasses the fragile transport stage of conventional entanglement generation, offering a potentially more robust and scalable method for quantum technologies. Their findings were published in Physical Review X and highlighted in Physics magazine.
