University of Illinois researchers develop cleaner gold recovery method
Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign have developed a new molecule that could significantly streamline the recovery of gold and other valuable metals from electronic waste. The breakthrough involves a redesigned molecule that performs three functions simultaneously: it selectively binds metal ions, remains soluble in organic extraction liquids, and carries a permanent electrical charge.
This built-in charge allows the liquid to conduct electricity, enabling researchers to use electrical signals to trigger the chemical reactions required to capture and release metals. This approach, known as electrochemically mediated liquid-liquid extraction (e-LLE), aims to replace the heavy reliance on acids, bases, and other chemical reagents traditionally used in the separation process. By using electricity to drive these redox reactions, the method could make metal recovery from electronic waste, mining streams, and industrial waste cleaner, simpler, and more energy-efficient.
