University of Illinois study links positive psychology to heart health
Research led by Professor Rosalba Hernandez at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign suggests that positive psychology and mindfulness interventions can significantly improve cardiovascular health. An analysis of 18 randomized controlled trials indicates that these practices are linked to lower blood pressure and reduced inflammation.
Studies involved adults aged 55 to 65, with women making up 35% to 55% of participants. Interventions varied in format, including telephone calls, journaling, SMS, and digital applications. Specifically, eight-week mindfulness programs were found to lower systolic blood pressure and inflammatory markers, such as C-reactive protein and fibrinogen, in individuals with hypertension or those recovering from acute coronary syndrome.
