University of Innsbruck researchers call for quantum technology regulation
A new global network of research institutions focused on the societal aspects of quantum technology was established at the University of Innsbruck on October 1. The alliance aims to address the ethical, legal, social, and political dimensions of the technology.
Network founder and legal scholar Matthias Kettemann emphasized a “golden window” for implementing regulations. He argued that, unlike the delayed regulatory responses to social media and artificial intelligence—which allowed major corporations to consolidate immense market power—there is an opportunity to establish frameworks for quantum technology before market dominance is established. Kettemann noted that late regulation in other sectors has negatively impacted social cohesion and stifled domestic innovation ecosystems by allowing large foreign firms to acquire emerging startups.
