University of Innsbruck study links bitter taste preference to personality traits
A study conducted by psychologists Kristina Sagioglu and Tobias Greytak from the University of Innsbruck has explored the potential link between a preference for bitter tastes and certain personality traits. Published in the journal ‘Appetite’, the research involved 953 adults in the United States.
The findings suggest that a general inclination toward bitter flavors—which includes items such as coffee, beer, tonic water, radishes, and celery—is associated with more pronounced ‘dark’ personality traits. Specifically, the researchers found the most consistent connections with everyday sadism and psychopathic traits.
However, the researchers clarified that the study does not prove that people who drink black coffee are psychopaths. Instead, the research focused on a general preference for bitter tastes rather than specific beverage consumption habits.
