University of Iowa band member dies after collapsing during football game
Derek Phillips, a third-year student and member of the University of Iowa marching band, has died following a collapse during the Hawkeyes' season-opening football game against Northern Illinois.
During the game, temperatures reached 94 degrees, prompting the university to announce that the marching band would forgo its scheduled halftime performance due to the heat. Phillips suffered a sudden cardiac arrest during the event, resulting in severe brain damage.
In a statement shared via Instagram, Phillips' family announced they made the “heartbreaking decision to remove life support” after medical teams at the University of Iowa Hospital were unable to reverse the damage. The family described Phillips as a “phenomenal musician” who brought light and kindness to those around him.
University of Iowa Public Relations Manager Chris Brewer stated that the university is in close contact with the family and is offering support to the band community during this time.
