University of Iowa celebrates North Hall garden harvest

The University of Iowa Office of Sustainability hosted a harvest celebration at the North Hall Garden on September 29, 2026. The event featured food prepared from produce grown in the campus garden, which includes vegetables, herbs, and pollinator plants.

The garden was established on the south side of North Hall by the student organization Determined Gardeners Incorporated Radical Farming (D.I.R.T.). While the garden has transitioned past its pilot stage, sustainability program manager Beth MacKenzie noted that maintaining the site during summer months remains a challenge due to student absence from Iowa City. Currently, the garden is managed by interns from the Office of Sustainability who oversee planting, maintenance, and harvesting.
