University of Iowa highlights unique football traditions and athletic culture

The University of Iowa maintains unique traditions and a culture of mutual respect across its athletic programs. One prominent tradition is the ‘Hawkeye Wave,’ which occurs at the end of the first quarter during home football games at Kinnick Stadium. During this moment, players, coaches, officials, and fans turn toward the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital to wave to pediatric patients and their families. This tradition began in 2017 following the opening of the new hospital facility.

In addition to stadium traditions, the university’s athletic culture is characterized by cooperation between different sports. Ben McCollum recently discussed the relationship between the football and basketball programs, noting that there is a shared desire for success across the department. McCollum specifically highlighted his respect for football coach Kirk Ferentz, describing him as a genuine leader and one of the best coaches in the country.
