University of Jyväskylä researchers develop method for precise molecular self-assembly
Researchers at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland have developed a new strategy to program synthetic molecules to self-assemble into specific three-dimensional structures. This method, known as hierarchical sequence control, aims to replicate the sophisticated molecular organization found in nature, such as the way proteins fold based on encoded sequences.
The process operates in two stages. The first layer of information restricts the assembly outcomes to four types of helices, while a second layer of information selects a single specific structure. In recent tests, this approach successfully produced a counterclockwise triple helix while effectively suppressing the formation of competing structures.
Professor Fabien Cougnon, who led the study, noted that fine-tuning the molecular sequence through careful optimization is essential for achieving this level of structural control. The breakthrough could lead to the development of advanced functional materials and programmable molecules.
