University of Jyväskylä study links identity development to mental well-being

A longitudinal study from the University of Jyväskylä indicates that identity development is not restricted to adolescence but continues positively throughout adulthood. Researchers tracked individuals at ages 27, 36, 42, 50, and 61, finding that identity continues to evolve, with the most significant changes occurring between the ages of 27 and 42.

The study defines a well-developed identity as one characterized by clear views and a sense of continuity, formed through personal exploration and commitment rather than simply adopting views from society or peers. Furthermore, the research established a link between positive identity development and higher levels of mental well-being, including improved life satisfaction and psychological and social well-being.
