University of Karachi professor assaulted following traffic dispute
Dr. Arif Khan Saqi, chairperson of the University of Karachi’s Department of Islamic Learning, was allegedly subjected to severe torture and illegal confinement following a traffic dispute in Karachi.
The incident occurred near Safoora Chowrangi when a double-cabin vehicle struck the online taxi Saqi was traveling in. When Saqi requested compensation for the driver, the son of a local hotel owner, identified as Konain Ali Gohar Shah, allegedly assaulted the professor with pistol butts and engaged in aerial firing. Saqi reported that he and his nephew were also subjected to physical violence and held captive at a local hotel.
Police have registered an FIR involving charges of attempted murder, assault, and wrongful confinement. While several suspects and security guards have been detained, the primary accused, Konain Shah, reportedly obtained bail to avoid arrest. The father of the accused visited Saqi’s home to offer an apology and seek a settlement, but the professor has refused, stating he will pursue legal action through the courts until the main perpetrator is apprehended.
Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar has demanded a detailed report on the incident, emphasizing that the safety and dignity of teachers must be protected.
