University of Kentucky economists release farm survival guide
Agricultural economists from the University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment (CAFÉ) have released a guide to assist producers facing an economic downturn. The publication, titled ‘Surviving the Farm Economy Downturn: 2026 Update’, was produced by the Southern Extension Risk Management Education Center (SRMEC).
The update includes 24 peer-reviewed articles addressing various challenges such as cattle markets, row-crop profitability, lender communication, bankruptcy, alternative crops, and value-added marketing. Six of the 36 contributing economists are based at the University of Kentucky.
Supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture, the resource aims to provide strategies for farmers dealing with softening commodity prices, elevated production costs, and uncertain markets. This version builds upon a similar resource developed ten years ago.
