University of KwaZulu-Natal upgrades engineering laboratory

The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) School of Engineering has upgraded its computer laboratory through a R2.2 million investment from Aberdare Cables. The new AberTech LAN facility, officially launched by Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training Dr. Nomusa Dube-Ncube, is designed to enhance digital learning and engineering skills development.

The upgraded facility has increased its capacity from 80 to 163 students. It features 175 new network access points, modern workstations, new projection systems, and improved lighting to create a collaborative learning environment.

Dr. Dube-Ncube highlighted the importance of industry-academia partnerships in ensuring graduates possess relevant workplace skills for South Africa’s economic growth, particularly within the energy sector, including renewable energy and electricity grids. She encouraged further collaboration through internships and work-integrated learning opportunities.
