University of Lagos professor unveils lead-free paint coatings

Professor Olayide Obidi, Head of the Department of Microbiology at the University of Lagos, has unveiled bio-based coating solutions designed to mitigate the health and environmental risks of lead in paints. The research utilizes nanotechnology to address the Nigerian paint industry's reliance on lead as a preservative to extend shelf life.

Obidi described lead as a cumulative neurotoxin linked to organ failure, developmental issues, and death. Her research involved a comparative evaluation of conventional biocides against green-synthesized nanoparticles, which showed significant improvements in controlling paint microflora. The new bio-based solutions have been patented and are prepared for commercialization. Obidi emphasized the necessity of bridging the gap between academic research and industrial application to ensure scientific breakthroughs benefit society.
