University of Lagos withdraws controversial sexual harassment advisory

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) issued a counselling advisory aimed at female students, urging precautionary measures such as avoiding handshakes with men, modest dressing, staying away from secluded areas and refusing intoxicants. The guidance was displayed on a roll‑up banner by the Student Affairs Division amid reports of sexual assault on campus, including a recent allegation against lecturer Dr. Samuel Ojogbo.

The advisory sparked widespread public criticism for its tone, which many perceived as victim‑blaming. Following the backlash, UNILAG’s Communication Unit, led by Adejoke R. Alaga‑Ibraheem, announced the withdrawal of the poster, stating it did not reflect the university’s values. The university reaffirmed a zero‑tolerance stance on sexual harassment and urged students to use official confidential reporting channels.
