University of León launches health study and rural engagement programs
The University of León (ULE) has launched the RAÍCES research project to investigate the dietary habits, lifestyles, and health of the adult population in the El Bierzo region. The study aims to determine if traditional dietary patterns linked to local culture are being maintained and how they relate to chronic diseases, physical activity, sleep, and overall quality of life. Participants must be residents of El Bierzo who have lived in the area for at least half of their lives.
In a separate initiative to connect academia with rural environments, the sixth edition of the Ralbar program has concluded. Thirteen ULE students spent two months working on community-based projects in various municipalities. These initiatives addressed diverse needs, including the recovery of traditional recipes in Matallana de Torío, the creation of a toy library in Villamor de Órbigo, and the mapping of local toponyms in Peranzanes. The program is supported by the Banco Sabadell Foundation and aims to apply university knowledge to real-world territorial needs.
