University of Liberia faces student demands and protest concerns

The Vanguard Student Unification Party (SUP) is demanding the immediate reopening of the University of Liberia (UL) and the restoration of effective classroom activities. The organization cited prolonged academic disruptions and significant infrastructural challenges, including deteriorating facilities, poor sanitation, inadequate laboratory equipment, limited internet access, and insufficient security.

While the university's academic calendar scheduled a resumption of classes for August 25, SUP argues that mere announcements do not resolve the underlying administrative, financial, and labor-related issues. The group has mobilized students to assemble at the Capitol Hill campus to campaign for accountability.

In a separate development, the University of Liberia administration issued a statement addressing the boundaries of student activism following an incident involving Representative Thomas Romeo Quiah. Quiah, a member of the University's Board of Trustees, was reportedly subjected to heckling and insults during a campus visit. President Dr. Layli Maparyan issued a public apology for the treatment of the lawmaker, while emphasizing that while students have the right to protest, such actions must not descend into personal attacks or undermine institutional dignity.
