University of Los Andes holds elections after 18-year hiatus

The University of Los Andes (ULA) in Táchira is holding elections to renew its university co-government bodies after an 18-year period of institutional paralysis. Approximately 300 active, contract, and retired professors are participating in the vote to elect representatives for the University Council, Nucleus Council, School Councils, and Appeals Council.

The suspension of democratic alternation since 2008 was driven by various rulings from the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ), which impacted electoral regulations and voting parity. The current electoral process, ratified by acting rector Patricia Rosenzweig and the University Council, aims to address academic self-management and curricular restructuring.
