University of Maine hockey honors Shawn Walsh legacy
The University of Maine hockey program continues to honor the legacy of coach Shawn Walsh, 25 years after his death. Walsh, who coached the Black Bears from 1984 until his passing on September 24, 2001, following a battle with kidney cancer, transformed the team into a major college hockey power.
Under his leadership, the program secured national championships in 1993 and 1999. His influence remains visible through the Shawn Walsh Hockey Center at Alfond Arena and the team’s signature gritty, two-way playing style. Former players and associates, including Eric Weinrich and Ben Guite, note that Walsh’s ability to identify and develop specific types of student-athletes remains a cornerstone of the program's identity.
