University of Maine men’s hockey seeks to rebuild program culture
The University of Maine men’s hockey team is entering a resetting season as they aim to reclaim the program’s culture and identity. Following a 2025 Hockey East championship, the Black Bears finished last season with an 18-14-3 record, a result coach Ben Barr described as a disappointment given the program's recent success and NCAA tournament appearances.
Barr noted that recent changes in NCAA eligibility for players from Canadian major junior leagues and U Sports have significantly altered the recruiting landscape. While Maine brought in several players from these sources, the influx resulted in a lack of cultural fit, with five of nine such players departing via the transfer portal.
The team is focused on establishing a strong work ethic and attitude as they prepare for their season opener this weekend against Holy Cross.
