University of Maine System adopts OpenAI tools for students and staff

The University of Maine System has implemented a $1.4 million, two-year contract with OpenAI to provide ChatGPT Edu access to its 30,000 students, faculty, and staff. The initiative aims to strengthen teaching and research by preparing students for a modern workforce.

As of October 8, more than 3,700 individuals across the system have registered for accounts. The enterprise version includes data privacy protections that prevent the information from being used to train OpenAI’s models. Despite leadership describing the rollout as a success, some students and staff have expressed concerns regarding the ethical implications of using AI-generated feedback in academic settings.
