University of Makeni grants provisional admission to students without English credits
The University of Makeni (UNIMAK) Senate has resolved to grant provisional admission to 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) candidates who did not obtain a credit pass in English Language. This one-off intervention aims to expand access to higher education following a national English language crisis.
To qualify, candidates must have obtained credit passes in four or more other subjects. These students will be admitted into degree programmes in all departments except for Law and Nursing, for which a separate statement is pending.
Admitted students must pass an English Language examination by October 31, 2028, to confirm their admission. Failure to meet this deadline will result in the loss of their place. As a condition of admission, students are required to attend compulsory remedial English classes led by a team headed by Andrew Sesay. Additionally, the university intends to approach the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to explore reactivating the UNIMAK Examination Centre to facilitate re-sits on campus.
