University of Manchester researchers model nuclear waste recycling
Researchers at the University of Manchester are proposing methods to transform nuclear waste management from a one-way process into a circular economy. By recovering uranium and plutonium from spent fuel elements, the researchers aim to reuse these materials as new fuel.
Studies indicate that more than 90 percent of the mass of a spent fuel element consists of residual uranium that was not split during the reactor process, alongside plutonium and radioactive fission products. To illustrate these complex processes, the researchers utilized a visual model inspired by the London Underground map.
The model compares six different variants of the nuclear fuel cycle, ranging from current single-use methods followed by permanent storage to largely closed cycles involving multiple reprocessing stages. The diagram uses lines to represent the paths of uranium, plutonium, and radioactive waste, with stations marking facilities for fuel production, reprocessing, reuse, or disposal.
