University of Maryland expands quantum technology leadership

The University of Maryland is strengthening its position as a global hub for quantum science through significant new investments and partnerships. The university has announced a $7.5 million expansion of its partnership with IonQ to increase quantum computing capacity and develop quantum networking. Additionally, the university’s QLab has expanded access to IBM quantum processors for researchers and students.

On the federal level, the National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a $37.5 million grant renewal to the University of Maryland-led NSF Quantum Leap Challenge Institute for Robust Quantum Simulation. This funding enters a new five-year research phase aimed at advancing fault-tolerant quantum simulation and scalability. Mohammad Hafezi of the University of Maryland will assume the role of director for the institute.

Further developments in the region include Microsoft opening a new quantum research center and the Defense Advanced Research Agency partnering with Maryland to establish the Capital Quantum Benchmarking Hub in College Park.
