University of Maryland offers $4,000 stipends for abortion training

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is providing a $4,000 stipend to eligible Maryland clinicians who participate in its Reproductive Health Fellowship. Part of the Maryland Abortion and Reproductive Clinical Health (MARCH) program, the fellowship offers a curriculum focused on medication abortion, patient counseling, procedural abortion care, and abortion simulations.

The program is funded by the Maryland Department of Health as part of a state-wide initiative to expand abortion access. This follows the 2022 Abortion Care Access Act and subsequent funding allocations by Governor Wes Moore. In February 2024, the University of Maryland School of Medicine and UMB received a $10.6 million state grant to support the Abortion Clinical Care Training Program.

Eligibility for the fellowship includes physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice registered nurses, and certified nurse-midwives licensed in Maryland. The initiative aims to ensure a sufficient number of healthcare professionals are trained to provide reproductive services across the state.
