University of Maryland suspends club tennis team over racist imagery

The University of Maryland (UMD) has indefinitely suspended its club tennis team following the distribution of an email containing racist imagery. The document, shared with various collegiate teams ahead of a tournament in College Park, featured symbols associated with the Ku Klux Klan integrated into the Maryland state flag.

In response to the incident, UMD recreation and wellness staff suspended the entire team and the team forfeited its tournament matches. Howard University Interim President Wayne A. I. Frederick condemned the imagery, stating there is no place for symbols rooted in racial terror and violence in collegiate athletics.

Black student leaders at UMD have held protests, demanding that the university name and expel the responsible members. Bryant Reed, president of the Black Student Union, expressed concerns regarding the university's tendency to address such issues superficially, calling for clear communication and accountability.

The UMD club tennis team issued a formal apology via social media, stating they take full responsibility for failing to remove the image. As part of their response, the team has made a donation to the National Museum of African American History & Culture at the request of Howard University.
