University of Medicine and Pharmacy Iași team advances artificial heart project

The MAVIS team, composed of students and researchers from the ‘Grigore T. Popa’ University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Iași, is moving to transform its award-winning artificial heart prototype into a medical product. Following a distinction at the Heart Hackathon 2026 global finals in China, the team is seeking several hundred thousand dollars in funding to support research, development, and animal testing.

Project coordinator Professor Alexandru Pleșoianu stated that a key objective is to establish a professional, full-time team to complement the current group of students and volunteers. This professionalization aims to accelerate the development process. The team is also actively seeking international partners, specifically excellence centers in Europe and the United States, to provide the necessary expertise and infrastructure for testing.
