University of Michigan computing center project faces Ypsilanti Township opposition

Residents and officials in Ypsilanti Township have expressed strong opposition to a proposed $1.2 billion computing center project by the University of Michigan. The project, which is being developed in partnership with Los Alamos National Laboratory, is planned for a site on the Huron River and is expected to be a 100-megawatt facility.

During a recent town hall meeting, community members voiced concerns regarding noise pollution, environmental impacts, and potential increases in local electric bills. Residents also expressed frustration over a perceived lack of transparency, noting that the university initially proposed a 20-acre project before acquiring significantly more land.

The township has already passed resolutions opposing the development, and the local utility provider has enacted moratoriums on supplying water to data centers. While the university maintains the facility will drive scientific advancements such as cancer research, local residents have cited concerns regarding quality of life and safety in residential areas.
